I first met Gary Stone, more than ten years ago, when he was Deacon at the St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School, in The Gap (Brisbane). However, it was when I heard him speak at a Men Connect Meeting, about the sometimes desperate plight of many returned veterans and their families that I found myself spurred into action.
Gary’s compassion moved me. His plan seemed so simple and yet for some reason it wasn’t happening through the mainstream veterans Services. What the veterans needed was a holistic approach to their care. A system that looked at them as a whole, not just the sum of individual broken parts.
So when he finished his talk, I approached him, and said that if he was going to set something up, then the people of his own parish should be the ones to help. To this day, I’m still unsure of what compelled me to step up, but I’m glad I did.
As I don’t have any skills that can benefit the Veterans directly, I offered my skills in banking and finance and was made Treasurer. From that point a key management group got together and we’ve moved forward together working to support Gary and his mission to support Veterans, their Families and their Carers.
